Blogs are great features for brands to use to share the content that sets them apart from their competition. A number of our clients use blogs to do just that or to create a sense of company culture. However, publishing posts isn’t enough to move the needle. Each post has to be discoverable, readable, and shareable. To help with this, we’ve put together a few SEO tips that anyone with a Squarespace blog can use.
Strategic use of keywords will improve the SEO of any web-based endeavor, but blogging especially. It is well worth your time to research keywords before you set out to write each blog post. Although you clearly know how to communicate about your topic, it’s helpful to know the words and phrases people are searching relevant to your topic each month and attempt to incorporate them into your post. Using Google’s Keyword Planner is easy-to-use and helpful.
FORMAT ON PAGE CONTENT FOR SEO
You are no stranger to the internet, so you’ve probably noticed that most articles online are formatted so that after every few paragraphs (or less) there’s another header introducing a new section. That’s not just to help you skim, it’s also to help search engines understand what you’re trying to communicate. Each header sends a signal to search engines about the content on your website. ASSIGN CATEGORIES AND TAGS
Squarespace allows you to assign multiple tags to each blog post, and mark each post as part of a number of self-created categories. We always advise our clients to create 1-3 categories with supporting tags so that they can keep their blog orderly and searchable. What categories and tags also does is feed search engines descriptors of each post. It’s a simple task that helps a lot with your search ranking.
IMAGE METADATA FOR SEO
Often the conversation around SEO is about what you can do for your website, or a web page, on a higher level, but granular details make up the whole, so it’s important to spend a minute on items such as images. You can do a few simple things to let your images help give search engines vital context around your content. To start, create a simple, hyphenated naming system for images. Each name should be no more than four words long and include descriptors about the image. Then, include a caption and/or an alt tag for each image. Doing so will not only help an accessibility reader tell the story you’ve presented on the page, but it’ll give Google even more data to read. USE THE LOCATION FEATURE
Use the location tab in the post settings to include your business location. This will help Google show your content to people near you.
Squarespace has a feature that allows bloggers to assign a location to each post. This is a powerful feature for those who blog on local topics, or for people in industries in which the location of their business brings them some level of clout. For everyone else, it creates another data point for search engines to understand more about their business. We recommend using it.
SHARE YOUR OWN CONTENT
Following through with the recommendations above will do a lot to give search engines such as Google the data they need to understand your blog post. Another signal that search engines search for is relevancy, and nothing says relevant like links to a post on other websites and when they are shared by users on social media. Share your posts on social media. Email them out to loyal readers. If you have a YouTube channel, mention the post in your video, and then post the link in the description or the comments. Send links to blog posts out to people who might want to share the post, or quote the post on their own site and link back to it. This will go a long way in feeding search engines what they need to understand your work.
